How to Feel Hope Again

Hope is necessary for us to continue to put forth the effort necessary to live (Richter, 1957). When we lose that hope, we are built with the ability to regain it. We can choose to process our anxiety, depression, anger, and grief. We can process our emotions, we just haven't been shown how. This is a clear example of someone that is doing it right now. I'll tell you how after.

What is your name?

K. Y.

If, for some odd reason, you could no longer do this type of emotional processing, would you be: very disappointed, somewhat disappointed, or not disappointed?

Very disappointed.

What is the worst moment from before you knew how to process your emotions?

My husband's death.

What is the best moment after you learned how to process your emotions?

When I feel a negative emotion, I know how to process it. It's wonderful to have a path to follow and not feel lost.

How has your attitude changed from before your training to after?

I feel good again. I giggle and laugh over silly things.

How hard was it to learn to be aware of your sensations and your mind-body connection?

At first, confusing, but in a short period of time, with my coach asking questions, I soon saw emotion coming to light.

What was the hardest part of learning?

Focusing. I am to be easily distracted.

What stopped you from doing this sooner?

I didn't think I needed it.

Our minds and bodies are not separate things. That idea comes from incorrect philosophy. The mind and body are intertwined. Each cell living cell of the entire body has intelligence, that's how they function and know what to do. We can use this.

Our feelings of overwhelm, worry, sadness, and frustration are more than words. Our feelings are deeper than words. To truly transform how we feel we must work at the level of feeling. It's simple. It even seems too simple. But truth often is. Yet it's not easy to do, because our feelings are powerful things. Emotions can be overwhelming, but we can handle them. We're made to be able to handle them.

All you have to do is focus on feeling the sensations in your body. Start small. Start with the tip of your finger. Start with a small amount of time, 30 seconds. Do not try to change anything, just experience what it is for you to experience. You might feel warmth or cold, heavy to light, tight or loose, a tingle, or pain. Whatever it is, just feel it.

Grow that ability. Do it for longer. Do it over a larger area. Move your awareness through your body. Feel. You may feel your emotions, just continue to feel your sensations. Don't try to relax. Don't try to let go. Just feel what there is for you to feel. If your mind jumps to memories, just continue to feel. If your mind jumps to future imaginings, just continue to feel.

By feeling, we change our feeling. It will change on its own. You are built with this ability already within you. Healing comes from within. It's like you have emotional indigestion. You can't talk your way out of indigestion. You have to let your digestive system do its work. It's the same with emotions, with your mind-body connection. You have to activate your emotional digestion system. Everyone has the ability to do this, including you. It's not easy, that's why I've made teaching materials and started a coaching business, to show people that they can do it. Give it a try. If you do it, it will work, because it's the way we are made. Hope is just on the other side of the feelings you're avoiding, hope is just on the other side of the feelings you can overcome.
